Hi, can someone tell me please how to work out how many carbs you are eating & what sort of veg has high carbs? I've starting eating tons of all kinds of veg but maybe this is wrong?
Do you set yourself a limit as to how much per day & then measure with kitchen scales? Sorry for sounding stupid. Thanks.

You need to get yourself a good book. There's a book called "carbs and cals", available on amazon that has a very comprehensive list of carb content for all sorts of food.

Regarding how much carbs you can tolerate, everyone us different. You need to get yourself a meter, test yourself before and after a meal. If a meal sends you high, then you know you need to cut some carbs out next time.

As SamJB says it is difficult to judge veg so use the meter. In general root veg are not too good, so have raw carrots rather than cooked to keep them low-GI

also, there are smart phone apps for example "myfitnesspal" which is very useful, if you dont have a smart phone there is an computer version but it dosent have the bar code zapper thingy

There is also an app for carbs & cals. Although it's not free, it's very good. Comes with pics that covers different portion sizes.

The Carbs and Cals book suggesed by Sam is excellent. I've had mine about 18 months now. It's particularly good on portion sizes, with photos of the foods in plates of known diameter. My husband, who has kidney failure was recommended it by the renal unit dietician, who was surprised to find we already have a copy. Portion and plate sizes are very much an issue. On our recent cruise and on the previous one, we had a "fine dining" dinner each night of 3 to 5 courses. It proved to be no problem for bg control as the portions were small at each course. I even had a SMALL piece of Baked Alaska without doing any damage.
If I didn't already have too much crockery, I'd buy myself plates and bowls to match those in the carbs and cals book.

PS I walked up 10 storeys worth of stairs after dinner each night too.

Carbs & Cals is an excellent book, still I find myself going back to The Calorie Carb & Fat Bible when unsure.
