I have had my medical exemption prescription charge certificate card now since December 2008 and is due for renewal 27/12 2013, 10 days time. How do I go about the renewal. I have had no reminders. Do I need to obtain a form and send off for the exemption card. Any advice would be welcome.

Hi. My medical exemption card was recently renewed. They got in touch with me by post and a form to fill out was included. Maybe it's worth getting in contact with them. I also believe that if you do have to pay for any prescriptions, you can claim the cost back, I maybe wrong on that but I'm pretty sure I've read that somewhere.

Thank you for the response. I was waiting for a reminder but something tells me that the literature stated this wouldnt be so. I have e-mailed the NHS contact for clarification of what to do next..
Thanks for the help.

When mine needed renewing the pharmacist said I would have to contact my surgery to get it renewed. She was wrong. I got a form in the post from Newcastle, it was fairly close to the renewal date but I got my new card before the old one ran out.

I've just read the letter I got with my certificate. It says that their system will automatically issue a reminder when the certificate is about to run out. It goes on to say that if you don't receive a reminder then you should contact them.
It is your responsibility to ensure you hold a valid certificate that covers the date you have the prescription dispensed free of charge.

I've never had one! (Unless I had one when I was first diagnosed at 12) - I asked at my GP and they said they didn't know how to get one! Luckily my chemists have known me for 20plus years and know that I am a real diabetic but even so! I will try contacting the NHS as suggested above

You should get a reminder but to be honest I've never actually had to show mine to anyone. That's not to say don't get one BTW ;-)
