medication advice.

Hi all
I have been following low carb & am losing weight slowly but my levels still not improved that much.
My DN wanted me to stop the Glimperimide & try either Forxiga (not keen as hve read the reviews), or Alogliptin which I agreed on.
However I can't cope with the awful gut ache....it has triggered my IBS badly & my mouth & face feel hot & prickly.
I stopped it & went bk to my left over Glim.
Am seeing her Weds & I really don't know where I am likely to go from here?
I hve had a good read up but all the likely meds seem to hve gut effects.
I hve slow digestion so don't think anything that slows the gut will help my IBS. Am I wrong?
Any suggestions? She seems to "pick" meds at ramdom!

Hi...I know it's not what everyone would advise, bu if your nurse is suggesting you come off one medication to try another but you think your stomach can't handle the drugs...personally, I would ask about trying without meds for a short period to see what your levels are like purely on the low carb diet. I was on Gliclazide (no stomach issues despite me having a sensitive digestive system, I have to say) but could't tell how much of difference it was making alongside the LCHF diet. I could only tell what was working when I ditched the pills and kept records of what I was eating and pre and 2 hour post meal meter readings. Do you have a meter ? Your DN, like most, will probably tell you you don't need to test (par for the course), but that is rubbish...I'd give it a try if I were you. I'm a Gemini myself - and we like to be in control of our selves where we can. i never regretted stopping the meds...but, of course, we do all differ. It just sounds like a good opportunity to try it out. Good luck.
 
I find a low fiber diet ( other than avocado) and not loads of veggies completely help my dumb stomach. Look at the FODMAPS foods and see where you are. I find if I'm not digesting right my bs is higher. I also keep protein on the low side and eat more plant fats than animal fats. SMALL meals work well. As much as I LOVE veggies I don't tolerate them well some more than others. avocado is very soothing to my gut and kind to my bs

As far as meds that's your call. Hopefully you can tweak your diet to not need meds. Ha I'm good gut issues is no fun.
 
I've ended up ditching veg except for odd stir-fry and taking multivitamins to help tum. When I have fat but low carbohydrates my gut hugely better, even on metformin. Mind u I take constipating painkillers but alongside metformin normally ok.
Would you consider no veg but multivitamins for your ibs?

Same for me and veg. Not worth the gut ache and if I'm not difesting right it's throwing other things off while trying to purge it.
Avo stopped my life long constipating. Oh geez, another reason to keep eating it haha.
I've recently been using a heating pad on low on ,y tummy and it's very soothing and relaxing even if my tummy is fine. It helps me sleep.
 
Sorry to change subject, but any opinions on flu jab.? The last 3 years I've had it @ been very bad for weeks/months after. Even had to take sntibiotics & short spell of steroids as got bad flu & affected my chest. Unsure about having flu jab this year, love to hear how otheres got on with flu jab, have it this year or not? Thanks.
 
I never get it and I never get the flu ( knocking on wood). My parents not get it and within two days they both have the flu.

There's nasties in those as well.

@Kristin251 thanks for reply, I had first flu jab about 18 years ago & was so ill with flu, still suffer with one ear as infection went into my ear, now got tinnitus. But last 3 years as disbetic & flu jabs I've been so ill for months after yet I never got flu or colds again after first flu jab but now diabetic I'm so ill 2 days after having flu jab for months but doctors said its not the fault of the jab, I'm not gonna have it again. Hi all, thanks for the advice.
Will try to answer questions, yes I already avoid all "windy, hot and spicy foods" fizzy drinks and so on as I know it triggers my IBS.

I have the IBS constipation (sorry if TMI) and take Movicol, when I had Endoscopies and Colonoscopies my guts were not very relaxed despite the sedatives so consultant said it was IBS in absence of anything else but my overall system is very "excited!" So the spasms and wind actually start at the breastbone all way down to lower tum.,I look about 20 months gone and its excruciating. The gas will not expel and I just have to nurse myself with heat and my hubby massages my back.

Well, the nurse has decided to increase the Glimpeprimide from 4 to the max 6 mg a day for three months and then do another HBA1C. My main concern with that is more weight gain and the additional hammering my poor old Pancreas is taking. Also if I low carb tooooo much I may well hypo!

Nurse was absolutely anti-any type of insulin at this point.

Yes, I do have a testing kit due to the med I am on and have not had any probs with lancets and strips on prescription.

Yes, I have considered stopping the Glim as an experiment and do really low carb to see if that helps, suppose I am worried about levels shooting up!

Must admit I had a screaming fit yesterday as I feel so trapped and so angry.

Nurse did wonder if my aversion to new meds triggers the IBS rather than the meds, she may be right, I don't know, all I do know is at the moment I am more confused than ever, constantly hungry and full of this gas. This can't be normal can it????? I am on Buscopan, does nothing......not does Meberevine or Peppermint based med, Windeze or any of these other "miracle cures" you see on TV lol!!!

Oh, and on th flu jab thing, I have mine every year and am usually fine apart form a stiff arm a couple of days later.....though last yr I did feel a bit out of sorts for a few days. Haven't had flu though.....touch wood. Also btw, had a one-off Pneumonia jab three yrs ago.

As for your IBS I think it's just a word they use when they don't know why.
Things I've found that helped me a lot was small snack sized meals and very low carb as carbs bloat me, cause pain, make me hungry and achy. VERY low fiber. Fiber causes 'stuck gas' for me too and constipation. For some reason avocado fiber is beneficial and cured my constipation. Keeping my meals very small and mostly some protein and fat is huge for me. NO grains or starchy veg what so ever or I'm in severe pain. Gluten and corn! No way.

I don't believe there is a cure for IBS But I do believe it can be managed with diet.

My hubby used to rub my back too and a heating pad on the stomach. Then flip! Helped but not always.
 
I usually have the flu jab with minimal side effects, but I have missed it once or twice through being away during the flu jab season and luckily didn't catch flu.

So I have no idea if it is helping.
 
Hi all,
Well, in the end the DN upped my Glimperimide from 4mg to 6mg per day.

It is so far having no effect on BG BUT I am feeling "trembly" at times during the day which is worse when I lie down at night.
As I also have Thyroid probs I am not sure it's the Glim at fault, but it is a really unpleasant feeling, my ears are also a bit buzzy.

Mind you, I have a feeling of fullness in my right ear so am wondering if it is a symptom of pressure causing the rest of it.

You can't see me trembling, it's as though I am sitting on a generator. Not painful, but making me anxious.

Any ideas?
