Hi All, Can anyone suggest an alternative to Gliclizide that doesn't cause wieght gain, disregarding Metformin as i can't take them, Ive been gaining wieght for 5 months now,2 months ago doc put me on Orlistat to help with weightloss, I've lost 2lbs in 2 months which in my book isnt good enough, i'm on a low fat, low carb diet, and ready for ripping my hair out, I'm at my GP tom and demanding a change of meds, any ideas?

low carb and low fat is very hard, and often there are hidden carbs we miss..diet is still the first choice

there are a few new drugs with weight loss, but the real safety wont be known for a while.

.a lot here are finding LCHF works for them [i know eating more fat doesn't make sense, but it replaces the lost energy and stops hunger]

Evidence is inconclusive for an ideal amount of total fat intake for people with diabetes;
therefore, goals should be individualized; fat quality appears to be far more important than quantity.
In people with type 2 diabetes, a Mediterranean-style, MUFA-rich eating pattern may benefit
glycemic control and CVD risk factors and can therefore be recommended as an effective alternative to a lower-fat, higher-carbohydrate eating pattern.

I did low carb, low fat, by portion control though.
How many calories do you eat a day, and what is your protein intake?
I was also switched on sitagliptin.

I feel your pain.

I'm afraid I can't comment on your medication, but I can state that after 30 years of not succeeding to lose weight and keep it off, low carbing, with enough fat and normal protein has been wonderful.

I'm slowly losing weight. I'm not hungry. Or cold. Or irritable. Or craving. It's such a relief.
And I'm eating til I'm full (large portions), feeling satisfied, and sleeping well.

But I've had to go very low carb in order to get these benefits.

I also feel for you, I gained loads when I took Rosiglitazone, ably assisted by Citilapram (getting fatter, who cares), and then again with Gliclazide.I have been lucky in that cutting carbs down to about 80gms a day has meant that I no longer take Gliclazide (or Januvia or Atorvastatin). I did find that lowering carbs reduced the effect of Metformin, is Metformin SR (Sustained Release) something you've tried?
My previous GP tried prescribing me Orlistat and then told me not to look up the side effects. Good job my pharmacist liked me, dreadful stuff and I thought Metformin was bad. With Orlistat I'd suggest not eating too much fat, it really is nasty stuff, much the same as Metformin really.
My only suggestion would be, if you haven't tried it, Metformin SR and a low carb diet, say 100gms a day.

Hi. Gliclazide causes weight gain because it stimulates the pancreas to produce more insulin which means the body can use carbs more effectively and store them as fat. I'm afraid keeping the carbs down is the best way forward. I don't know what you mean by low-carb but you may need to stay below, say, 150gm/day or even less. Yes, Sitagliptin could help a bit as it keeps the insulin output from the pancreas going for a bit longer after a meal and should have minimal effect on weight

Gliclazide had the same effect with me, I'm now on forixga alongside metformin and sitagliptin, which seems to be working, and the forixga helps with weight loss too.
