I had a medication review last month. The reason for this was I was put on some medication a year ago after a heart attack that I had to take for 12 months.

I'm type 2 and not currently on any diabetes medication. I was on metformin 3x500 per day, but that was stopped when I had the heart attack last year.

So the doctor told me to stop the anti platelet drug Ticagrelor, a blood pressure drug called amlodipine and a drug, ranitidine, that was given to offset stomach problems that might arise from taking the Ticagrelor.

Since I came off these drugs I've noticed my fasting levels have improved considerably. My previous results always showed a large rise compared to my pre bed reading from the night before. Now my fasting level is constantly lower than my bedtime reading.

Is this a normal reaction to changes in medication or is something bad happening that I need to get help with.

Thanks.

Depends on the levels of course but usually lower is better and I think that many drugs will have an impact on BG levels so stopping taking things is usually beneficial.
What kind of levels are you currently seeing?

Prior to the medication changes typical readings were about 7mmol before bed and 9mmol fasting st 7 am the following morning.

Since the changes the bedtime reading is about the same, but the fasting reading has gone down below 7mmol.

Hi. Many meds increase BS which medics don't take into account or even know. I would keep off any meds the GP doesn't think are necessary but Metformin is a good safe drug and usually works well with other meds but check with the GP or pharmacy

Ok well in my view 7 is still pretty high so certainly nothing to worry about on the "going low" front.

I can’t comment on the other two meds but I can tell you my experience of Amlodipine. When I was first diagnosed Type 2 I was on amlodipine for high blood pressure. However as I lost weight and got my diabetes under control my BP dropped so I was able to stop it. My blood sugars dropped a little so I did some Googling and did find some evidence that Amlodipine does raise some people’s blood sugar levels.
