MEDICATION

I was diagnosed with diabetes last week. I very rarely eat sweets/cakes, don't take sugar and only drink water or diet juice. I decided to try the low carb approach and my fasting BS has gradually gone down from 17.9 to 7.6. I'm taking 1 Gliclazide (80mg) in the morning and the same in the evening. This has probably helped reduce my BS. However, in the week I have gained 3lbs. I don't want to put weight on so would like to try low carb without the medication. Has anyone else tried this?

Hi and welcome.
I don't think it's one or the other just yet. First try to get your BS down permanently, then, with medical advice, you can discuss whether to come off your meds.
It's early days for LCHF, so give it several weeks before you make any decisions. Gaining weight on a low carb diet would be very unusual, so concentrate on getting your BS down first.
It's certainly possible to lose weight and come off all medication on a LCHF diet, because I've done it myself.

Can you tell us a bit more about your BMI/Weight? Gliclazide is normally started if there is a possibility you are a LADA and your pancreas needs a kick. Metformin is the normal starter if you have any excess weight (see the NICE Diabetes Guidelines for more info); this helps with insulin resistance. Weight gain with Gliclazide implies your carb intake may be a bit high so reducing the carbs may help a lot.

My bmi is 27.5 and have been eating 20-30g of carbs per day. What is LADA?
