Type of diabetes
Type 2
I am totally in trouble with my medication. At present I am not taking any. I would like to know what harm it will bring me. My doctor is allowing me to do this for 2 months. My blood sugar is 10 of a morning, rising as I eat 18 or so. Then goes down quite quickly. I was on Januvia for a couple of years which worked well. I started to get bloated and a painful tummy. I read up about Januva (sitaglyptin) not very good reviews. I had a ct scan of my pancreas which is anthropic (small) I then had a camera into my pancreas , no sign of pancreitis or cancer. I left off the medication and changed to Metformin 500mg which made my tummy play up again. I was then prescribed forxiga which made me tired and feeling sick. What shall I do? change my doctor ? she is
a diabetic doctor as well as doctor in surgery. Will I fall into a coma I am quite concerned.

It is difficult when medication doesn't agree with you.

My first question would be what are you eating to get a huge spike rising from 10 to 18?

Many Type2's control their blood sugar by eating fewer carbs. Carbs are what make your blood sugar rise. Have you read Daisy's introduction? viewtopic.php?f=20&t=17088

A good website for explaining what to eat is http://www.dietdoctor.com/lchf

Are you overweight? If you aren't too overweight then Gliclazide could be suggested, but it does have a tendency for weight gain.

Were you prescribed normal metformin or was it the SR or ER version? The SR or ER version is much kinder on the stomach. I found that wheat and metformin are not good friends at all.

There are things you can do, the meds don't do everything. The levels you are at, you are at much more risk of complications.

Thank you Denise. Metformin SR. You make a lot of sense. I will look at the link you sent me. Thank you.
Funnily enough, I am trying to cut out as much wheat from my diet as I can. I am not overweight, I swim 5 times a week, and any type of food sends my sugar high . Porridge for breakfast to keep me going while I swim. I am not to clued up on food ie: carbs, ect:
Once again, thank you Denise

As you say you are not overweight, you may have been mis-diagnosed as a Type 2 (although not all Type 2's are overweight) and may be a late onset Type 1 or a Type 1.5. Ask for a referral to the hospital, especially with the problems you have had with meds. I wouldn't eat porridge as it would have too much of an effect on me, but you can substitute some of the oats for nuts and it makes it lower in carbs.
