This medication flushes some excess sugar out through the kidneys, but only some. If you are eating a lot of carbs then you will have a lot of sugar in your urine and that is what causes UTI's and thrush. Like most type 2 meds it will not control diabetes on its own without diet intervention. The first few days on this med I was constantly peeing and thirsty with a mild headache. Once my system got used to it these all went away. It took about 3 or 4 days for me but I was already low carb when I started this med.

One thing I would say though is that regarding your specific query, relating to your colitis; I think that might best be addressed by a conversation with your Doctor who will have a clear understanding of your personal medical history and conditions.

Do your Doctor do telephone consultations? My GP does those, and it's considerably easier to speak to a GP at my surgery than it is to have a face-to-face consultation. Clearly a telephone consultation doesn't work when you need to be examined, but for just a conversation I find them ideal.
