hi, I've been given a new medication called dapagliflozin but after reading the side effects I'm not sure whether or not to take them. Is anyone else taking this and is it ok. I also have colitis and didn't like the fact that it could cause UTIs which I'm thinking may affect my colon. I know I should probably see my GP but thought I would ask people on here first.
 
@sascha2 - I don't and never have taken this medication, but we have members who do. There may be someone with personal experience around in a while, as the forum gets busier for the evening.

One thing I would say though is that regarding your specific query, relating to your colitis; I think that might best be addressed by a conversation with your Doctor who will have a clear understanding of your personal medical history and conditions.

Do your Doctor do telephone consultations? My GP does those, and it's considerably easier to speak to a GP at my surgery than it is to have a face-to-face consultation. Clearly a telephone consultation doesn't work when you need to be examined, but for just a conversation I find them ideal.

Hi there, I take this medication along with metformin. I have been taking it for almost 2 years with no issues. Not one UTI or bout of thrush. BUT !! I also eat a very low carb diet. This medication flushes some excess sugar out through the kidneys, but only some. If you are eating a lot of carbs then you will have a lot of sugar in your urine and that is what causes UTI's and thrush. Like most type 2 meds it will not control diabetes on its own without diet intervention. The first few days on this med I was constantly peeing and thirsty with a mild headache. Once my system got used to it these all went away. It took about 3 or 4 days for me but I was already low carb when I started this med.

Thank you for the information on this medication. I was a little afraid to take it because I read the leaflet on all the side effecrpts, but I will give it a try and stick to a low carb diet as I need to lose some weight.x
