Morning,

My Cholesterol has come back raised from 5.1 to 6.3, I've refused statins so I can try and reduce by diet.
At the mo I'm doing low carb stuff to keep B/G levels down, what's the general feeling behind this diet, it looks ok but I'm a bit wary regarding the bread etc?

Hi Dave, As always I think we should be guided by our meters and modify our diets accordingly unless we want to take meds to keep our Hba1c down. Did they do your trigs and hdl btw? regards D.

I don't think there is an "off the shelf" diet that will be ideal for everyone.

You have to decide what is right for you and adapt what isn't.

Personally I find a LC diet following the Med diet principles works for me, but you will have to find out for yourself what works and what doesn't.

Well they did say the Mediterranean diet is the second most healthy diet out of 100 different countries diets...number 1 was the Icelandic diet...I think the UK came 35 on the list. The Mediterranean diet... and not just because of the 100 diets... has always been considered a healthy one because of the lower rate of heart problems there . I am sure if you want to try it you can adapt it to suit you we all have to find the way that works for us best

Hi no they didn't separate the figure down.

Thanks, I've only just been diagnosed (July) but getting the feeling that we've got to make our own way with things.
I've been getting pretty mixed messages from the GP Nurse, I don't even know if she's a Diabetic Specialist.
Advice was usual party line, stick to Wholemeal Bread, Brown rice and potatoes, don't test your own B/G wait for the 3 month Hb1, so I enquired how would I know what food spiked my B/G, reply was wait for the test ( closing the gate after the horse has bolted comes to mind!).So I think it'll be a mix of both, keep testing to see if there's anything that doesn't agree.
Thanks for the advice :D

I suspect the NHS line on meters and testing for T2's is not soley down to costs but partly that a fairly high percentage of the general population given a meter will either develop an unhealthy obseesion about testing and attempt over control of their blood glucose levels or the opposite extreme of being not very bright couch potatoes who will not make use of it.
It is easy to forget on a forum such as this that forum members are a self-selected group who have had the motivation and brain power and technology to search for reliable guidance on managing their condition.
---- I will now put my soap back in the loft.

Hi sirmone,
Doctors see heath care as a partnership with patients now. Some may have an old fashioned approach but I have not found it so in the practice I visit. The poor advice given to nurses from the British Dietetic association is largely the reason for diabetics being misled on diet. Sure thing we would be disturbed a lot if we ate the recommended carbs and then metered ourselves! I believe education all round is the only solution. I am sure patients are more than capable if given the correct I formation. D.
