Why do I keep doing it to myself? Every so often I think I’m getting the hang of this, then something happens that really makes me wonder! I’m now testing when I get up, plus either my main meal of the day, or if I eat anything I haven’t before, or for some time. I’m also slightly increasing my intake, in an effort to stabilse weight and deal with increased physical activity.

Yesterday we ended up having an unplanned lunch out, when we bumped into some friends. I had a tuna mayo sandwich (white baguette – I know – I had expected a club sandwich!), with salad, and a French style dressing style, which had a sweet undertone to it.

Anyway, before lunch, 4.3, which is pretty much as expected. Food took ages to arrive, and we ended up going for a swim around an hour after we ate. As I don’t always deal with baguette bread too well, I thought I would test before swimming, in case I significantly over-ran the 2 hour test. Er,…….. 7.2. I felt devastated. Last time I had a leading 7 was weeks ago, and that was a rogue one-off. After my quick swim, I was 5.4, which I would have been happy with, had I not seen the interim reading.

Memo to self. Don’t panic!! And breathe……..

In my business life I have dealt with far more stressful scenario, involving thousands of people an billions of pounds, but this diabetes gives that a run for its money, from time to time. It’s like a naughty child. Just when you think you might have some understanding of what’s going on, a simple thing derails the confidence.

Rant over. Normal service has been resumed.......................................

.............. until next time!

The key is to recognise there will always be next times but so long as they are relatively infrequent then one off high readings are probabky fine. If you think about it non diabetics can get high readings if they get ill just like diabetics and that doesn't cause long term problems.

Feel free to rant whenever if it makes you feel better:)

im surprised your surprised :) because youve got terrific control, it dosent mean its gone away, it just means you have great control :) if a non diabetic ate bagette i wouldnt be surprised if they went into the 6`s or maybe even higher so your reading was probly quite normal and nothing to worry about, unless you have a bagette everyday of course :)

I think you should be pleased it was only 7.2. If I ate anything on a white baguette I'd be at least double that three hours later. Don't be too hard on yourself :)

Just what I was thinking. 7.2 is great for refined empty carbs. I'm not diabetic but if I'd eaten that baguette I'd have hit 9 or 10... It happened to me the other day. I hit a 10.. I was annoyed!

You're doing just great.
Control like that is gonna get you a great A1c test result.

PLUS. your 7.2 reading was after only 1 hour! Pretty good!

I was more annoyed by myself for losing perspective on the 7.2; after all, non-diabetics should be under 7.8 after 2 hours. I just went from cool, calm and laid back to, "What??" In a mili-second.

One day I'll get there.

(Not that I'm impatient at all.)

Milli-seconds are fine.. it's when it gets to nano and atto-seconds that you need to worry. :sour:
