Does anyone know if having an hba1c whilst menstruating affects the result?

I know anemia can produce a falsely high hba1c.

You mean the test taken then? No it won’t make any difference.

The test looks at how red blood cells have been affected by glucose over their lifetime and results in an average level over about 12 weeks as a result (the typical lifespan of a red blood cell). Blood conditions can affect it due to the size, shape, lifespan or number of the red blood cells present. These cells are continuously being replaced with fresh new unexposed ones roughly 3 monthly.

So it’s not affected by menstruation (or food eaten or a bad nights sleep or stress on the day of the test), just ongoing issues throughout the period the test covers.

No. But if they want to check your urine at the same time, postpone. Traces of blood will show as protein in your urine. If it's only a blood test, go ahead!
