Mental Health problems & insulin dependant diabetes

hi fellow diabs I've been type 2 for about 2 & half years and for the 1st 2 years I was quite pleased with my blood glucose levels (this was helped by me taking voluntary redundancy from work) However the last 6 months or so my blood sugar levels seem to be creeping up (still at reasonable levels though) Maybe this is normal and perhaps due to a more 'laid back' attitude as you find that the world has not ended?
Another concern, which is much more of a worry, is that a relative has recently been put on insulin as well as his normal medication after being admitted into hosptial with very high blood glucose levels. Apart from the usual concerns there is another factor, he also has mental health problems. This opens your eyes to how stretched the care services are as my relative is still in hospital while the family are trying to get additional home care to assist him with his new diabetic condition as he lives on his own and there is a real concern he will not recognise what is wrong if he goes into a 'low'.

Hi tcwjones,

Welcome to the forum and sorry no-one has responded to your post so far. Good luck getting your levels down and hope this forum helps you achieve your goals.

Thinking about how health and care choices are now so often made on cost grounds, how do you think your relative would get on with a Continuous Glucose Monitoring System (CGMS)? Although the system is not cheap, it may be much cheaper than the sort of care you're talking about, and provide some backup and prompting for when levels get low (or high for that matter!)? Worth considering maybe...
