Merry Christmas all!
I was diagnosed in September and just starting to come to terms with all of this stuff.
I'm slowly coming to terms with it all but what I am really struggling with is people's attitudes and lack of understanding. OH is supportive beyond belief and so is DSnearly18 but as for the rest of them!!
OH's mother was diagnosed as Type 2 and now she tells me she has moved on to being Type 1. I didn't think that happened but I'm willing to keep an open mind. Her latest is to tell me to eat a sandwich in the middle of the night and to drink regular not diet drinks as diet drinks are bad for you. I said if you don't mind I will follow the advice of my own doctor and nurse because your Type 2 advice obviously didn't work for you as you are Type 1. For once there wasn't much she could say!

As for Christmas, I feel so bad because there is a distinct lack of goodies around here. OH is trying to lose weight and learn as I learn and hopefully prevent the onset of diabetes.
For various reasons, money amongst others we have cut down on presents for everybody which is fine but I didn't no whether to laugh or cry when the first two presents I opened were a box of chocolates from a close friends and a box of sugary biscuits from OH's mother!!

So, will keep going, keep smiling and be relieved when today is over and I can get back to a normal routine!

It takes a while for the dust to settle and for routines to be established with this thing, but one thing is for sure, and that's that most non-diabetics find it all very difficult to get their heads around. To be honest, that's not too surprising, as eve from the diabetic side of the fence, we find it tricky getting to grips with it ourselves.

From posts various people have made on here, the well-meant, but dire present choices don't stop after the initial stages, so we just have to get used to that bit!. Thankfully, I never really received many chocs and and biscuits, so no great change for me, there.

I don't know what dietary route you have chosen to taken, but if you read around the forum (not today, obviously!), there is some great information around.

Whilst your MIL was probably right that diet (artificial sweetener) drinks aren't great for us, the "normal" Coke/Pepsi options are far worse for our bloods.

Merry Christmas.

Hi jellybean, look on the bright side......you can save money next year...and give the choc's to them as thier pressies::))
Thier are lots of meal and food ideas on here , just check out some of the Recipes and you will be amazed! Welcome to the forum , keep us in the loop and happy Xmas to you and yours ::))

Blimey!
Your ma-in-law is not heading in the right direction, is she!
Do you know what her hba1c is? Does she?

Congrats on sticking with it over Xmas! It ain't easy!
I have a cunning plan for my unwanted Thorntons choc - I'm going to give them to a friend of mine who has sometimes given me chocs. And I'm going to say 'can you take these off my hands? Because of course, as a diabetic, I shouldn't be eating anything like this.'

Hi @Jellyb don't feel despondent have a look at 'Who got chocs off Santa' thread, people have some very strange ideas, even those who are diabetic themselves! I was given a box of baklava off someone who is T2 and knows I do lchf :headbang:

And don't feel bad about cutting back on pressies/goodies, it's how you spend the time with the people around you that's important. Hope you had a lovely day anyway x

Thanks for your replies folks.
The friend who gave me the chocs later sent me a message saying they were diabetic chocs. I think that because they were 'no-added sugar' she thought that meant diabetic chocs. I felt bad because she meant well.

OH's mother on the other hand.... I said thanks for the (sugary) biscuits but I had let OH eat them all. She started on an arguement - 'BUT THEY WERE FOR BOTH OF YOU!' I bit my tongue and didn't say a word. She told me that last week her BS numbers were in the 30's and 40's and last night on the phone she said she had to go because she was on the verge of a coma. I give up...

Yes it's often best not to get drawn into an argument, for your own sanity if nothing else! Just lead by example your mum will get the message eventually. Your friend sounds like she's got the right idea, just needs a little bit more info
