i need help here please!
My doctor says that she doesnot want to put me onto metaformin, as i suffered from severe anorexia as a child/teenager!
She says that metaformin can bring on anorexia feelings and she doesnot want me to feel scared about it! As i went from being too underweight to being overweight as a adult!
I get severe gut rot from certain foods and drinks!
I am wondering what other type of medication is there, at minute i am on diet only type 2!
My main worry is that i take my blood sugar before eating it is 6.4. 2 hours later i am 11+ in blood sugars! My morning fasting is always 7+. nowadays, my doctor says that this is a worry with everything else i am going through!
I have had a Mri scan today, for other health reason's!

Hi Sandy.

Yes, there are many alternatives to Metformin. Take a look here, there is about 3 pages of information. Don't bother with the survey. It is in clear and concise format.

If your bg levels go up like that then maybe you should take a close look at the food you are eating, a slight change to your Diet may help there.

Hope this helps.

Hi hanadr.

Anorexia is a known side effect of Metformin.
Side-effects anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea (usually transient), abdominal pain, taste disturbance, rarely lactic acidosis (withdraw treatment), decreased vitamin-B12 absorption, erythema, pruritus and urticaria; hepatitis also reported

Hi sandy,
I do know people on metformin who have to force themselves to eat as they never feel hungry. This is on a high dose.
You seem to be going through a lot at the moment and perhaps that is why your Dr. does not want you to feel anxious about your eating habits? Try not to worry too much as this will make your blood sugars higher.
As Ken says, there are alternatives. Metformin does seem to help with weight loss but it is a gradual process, you don't lose pounds overnight.
Be guided by your Doctor as she seems to have your best interests at heart and she is looking at the overall picture with regard to your medical problems. I know you have said that you are happy with this Dr. You could ask her what she thinks is the best way forward and what medication she would recommend and then research the benefits of that particular drug before you make a decision.
Hope this helps,

Catherine.
