Hi there
I have recently been told by my doctor that I have impaired glucose tolerance/prediabetes, and if I do nothing about it I will develop diabetes in 10 years or so. This was picked up after I went to him complaining of a metallic taste in my mouth which I have had for months (pregnancy and gum disease etc have been ruled out) He did blood tests for all sorts of things and the only thing which came up was the glucose problem. He did not seem to know or care whether this was to do with the metallic taste. Has anyone had any experience of this? I feel it's likely that it's related to my blood sugar level being high, as it's not there first thing in the morning and then comes after I eat.
The blood test was a random one, not a fasting one, but the GP still made his diagnosis, without mentioning any sort of follow-up whatsoever. Is that enough? Should I be tested more thoroughly for a clearer picture or doesn't it matter if the glucose was high enough on a random test?
I have no diabetes in my family, I'm a very healthy weight, I walk miles and miles every day (honestly...I don't drive and today a typical day I walked approx 7 miles), I'm 'only' 39 and I'm not a higher risk ethnic group. I was eating a fair bit of chocolate/biscuits/cake so I have cut that out straight away. I always have wholemeal bread/pasta/brown rice but I do eat a lot of carbs as I have a fast metabolism and I'm hungry about every 2 hours. I realise that will probably have to change, but I'm vegetarian (with a little bit of fish) so what can I eat to fill up? I go wobbly if I don't eat very regularly. My days are a bit crazy as I look after my 4 year old and 1 year old full time at the moment so lots of preparation would be difficult.
Am thinking of getting a glucose meter to see what's going on in more detail: a good idea or over the top at this stage?
Any thoughts gratefully appreciated. Thanks.
