Hi, I'm recently diagnosed and on Metformin number six. The diabetes Nurse said it might be a good idea to buy a meter. I already have a One-Touch Ultra 2 which I bought 2/3 years ago for self-diagnosis and has been in a drawer ever since minus batteries (results were negative so I put my fatigue down to bad sleep). I'm one of those blokes who won't go to the doctor unless half-dead (which I felt like a fortnight ago). Thing is, should I ditch the Ultra and start again? The control stuff and strips seem relatively pricey. I can afford it on my pension (71y.o.) but feel I'm paying too much.I'm determined to lose 25kg and reduce the problem anyway.

Generally, the cost of a meter is insignificant compared to the cost of strips. I take it your GP won't prescribe strips so you're slef funding?

I'm assuming you're in the UK (if you're not the recommendations will differ

Hello Caffree, and welcome to the forum.
If you can get hold of a relatively cheap meter and do some testing to see how your meals affect you, testing just before starting to eat then again two hours later so you can adjust the amounts and the foods you eat then you should soon see your blood glucose levels falling.
The usual advice is to avoid the high carb foods - the main ones are potatoes, anything made from grain and high starch foods, and anything with sugars, even the sweeter fruits. Try to limit the increase in your readings to 3 whole numbers, then reduce down to just two as you get the hang of it. With any luck your metabolism will cheer up considerably without being burdened by the carbohydrate it can't cope with and normality will return, along with energy, cheerfulness and general well being.
 
If you still need the glucose strips for One Touch Ultra, please let me know. I have some spare that expires on March 2019
 

The Tee2 is no longer free but is still quite cheap as are the strips.
