Hi
I have had to go onto metformin twice a day I took one this morning but my sugar is still high. Does it take a while to get in my system ?

I've never taken it, but I believe it can take a couple of weeks to build up to its peak efficiency. You will get most benefit from modifying your diet than with Metformin alone.

have a read of the forum. There's loads of information on here you'll find helpful.

Good advice from Andbreathe. Yes Metformin doesn't work or kick in instantly, instead it usually takes a couple of weeks before it becomes fully effective.
Though Metformin has become a first choice medication for controlling Type 2 diabetes and is proven a good medication in controlling diabetes blood glucose levels, in the initial stages of taking Metformin you must be aware that your body might react somewhat against this medication and produce a few side effect that aren't very pleasant.
Not everyone experiences these initial side effect and I hope that you will be one of those that fall into this category, but do continue even if they occur, bearing in mind that a SLOW RELEASE version of Metformin is also available should this be the case.

Hi. Although a good drug, Metformin only ever has a small effect on blood sugar e.g. 1 to 2 mmol perhaps. It is best used when you are overweight to reduce insulin resistance. Diet is always the number one priority. If you are normal weight then Gliclazide is often prescribed as it stimulates the pancreas to produce more insulin assuming you still have working beta cells left and your insulin output is too low to use up the glucose in the blood.

Personally I never found Metformin very effective although that's no reason to stop taking it if you can.

The improvement in blood sugar levels I got from changing my diet to lower carb swamped any effect I got from Metformin and so improved matters that I came off blood sugar lowering meds altogether at that time.
