I am a train driver (31 yrs) age 51 have type 2 diabetes controled by metformin 850mg 3 times daily. Also take sinverstatin and ibersartin (blood pressure) diet control also.My consultant has instructed me to take metformin 30 mins before eating, this has been successful for many yrs, with no side affects.Recently,my new employer who does not respect or allow me to utilise this procedure has caused me major problems.I am not able to eat within time scale as medically advised, sometimesI am prevented from eating at all for up to 15 hrs at a time.As a result I am experiencing for the first time, nausia, headache, stress and a general fealing of being unwell. This is affecting my safe performance as a train driver. What can I do as I am obliged to overnight in hotels and unable to make my own provision of any suitable foodstuffs owing to the unsocial hours I am required to work(Food unavailable at hotel,my employer fully aware). Will these side affects diminish in time

to be honest they are totally in the wrong expecting you to do so, i would see the cab for advice, i certainly wouldnt risk my health for any job ;)

Sorry to hear you are having such a tough time at trying to manage your diabetes.
The Advisory Conciliation and Arbitration Service, (ACAS) offers free, confidential, impartial advice on employment rights. Tel: - 08457 474 474 Mon - Fri 8.00 a.m. - 6.00 p.m.
Your union can also advise you. This problem is detrimental to your ongoing health and needs to be resolved.
Hope this helps,
Catherine.

contact your union etc about this, they are not treating you right.

Employers have to make reasonable adjustments for your condition, it's part of the DDA. disability discrimination act.
It's the law.
I was told i could only stop and eat or drink after 4 hours work.
Resulting in bad blood sugar control.
I pulled the old DDA out of the bag and they quickly backed down.
Good luck

I think you should take a more flexible and proactive approach. Why not make up a lunch box, and keep a bag of nuts on hand for snacking? :D
