Hi.
I’m type 2 diabetic and take gliclazide, alogliptin and metformin to control bg. I was recently diagnosed as having low vitamin B12 for which I’m having 6 injections within 2 weeks, then probably 1 every 12 weeks. I was also told it had gone down drastically over the past few years. I re-read the leaflets that come with all my medications, and saw that metformin can lead to low B12. I’m fairly sure this is the reason behind my deficiency, (I eat reasonable amounts of dairy, eggs and meat which are the main sources of that vitamin) though no one official has said anything.
When I first started taking it, I was told metformin helps protect other organs. Does anyone know of or take an alternative to metformin which does a similar thing? I will be talking to the GP’s diabetic team, but wanted to go in with a bit of knowledge. I do feel awkward telling them what I feel they should have told me though.
Thanks
