metformin and alcohol

Can any one tell me why I can't drink alcohol, even moderately, whilst taking metformin?

I've been on 2000mg a day and drink like a fish, mostly vodka and soda. Been drinking daily for the last 10 years of diagnosis.

It's a myth, like most of the dumbed down advice that so-called hcp's and gp's dole out to the masses.

Try a drink and see, if it doesn't suit you don't do it again.

I've spent a bit of time drinking in Liverpool, Baltic Fleet and all that, used to stay at the Adelphi in it's heyday, gone down hill now I understand.

The reason why the recommendation of not to drink alcohol whilst taking metformin is that there is a risk of a serious condition called Lactic Acidosis http://diabetes.emedtv.com/metformin/me ... cohol.html

I've been on metformin for over five years at a high dose and drank alcohol and not had any problems.

Take no notice - it's a load of twaddle. Most evenings I wash my metformin tablet down with a glass of red wine :lol:
