Metformin and Gliclazide

Hi again all

As I said on my previous post - a few questions...

Hubby newly diagnosed Type 2 and was started on Metformin 500mg with a gradual 2 weekly increase to 2000mg. Unfortunately, he couldn't tolerate it at all (upset stomach and several trips to the loo night and day). GP put him on a "prolonged release" Metformin but as soon as he reached 1000mg the upset stomach came back. GP now wants him to take just 500mg (which Hubby tolerates) and has introduced Gliclazide 80mg per day (two halves).
We're both concerned because since taking Gliclazide he seems to suffer more light heads and the readings on his home monitor seems so erratic, but then nobody has told us what readings we should expect i.e. before brekkie, after brekkie, before lunch, after lunch, before eve meal and after eve meal.
We also don't know the difference between Metformin and Gliclazide?
As I mentioned in last post, he has severe Epilepsy too and is meant to be increasing his anti convulsant meds over the next couple of months aswell as increasing the meds for Type 2.
He also takes Atenolol for High Blood Pressure and the GP wants to "discuss" medication for cholestrol on our next visit.
Hubby quite down at the mo as trying to cope with so much and as I am Carer we're both getting quite frustrated with lack of information.
Kinda feel when we see GP he just sees Hubby as "another statistic" rather than look at the whole situation as Hubby has approx ten Epileptic partial seizures weekly too so we have a lot to deal with.

I know we need to talk to GP again but he doesn't seem to understand our concerns about taking so many different meds as nothing seems to be in control anyway.

Thanks.

Hi sweetenuf.

Just spotted your post and have time for a quick response.

You need to get him a referral to an Endocrinologist who is an expert in these matters. Your GP frankly seems happy to just let things 'plod' along without really doing anything. Ask for that second opinion and make sure it is with the right specialist. You cannot let this just drag on, something needs sorting now. That is the way to get back in control.

An Endo will be able to juggle all the conflicting meds and no doubt get your hubby back on the road again ?

As for the difference between Metformin and Gliclazide, there are numerous previous posts on here about both. However, I am sure some kind souls will give you the information about them. If not, I'm back later / tomorrow.
