Metformin AND Glimeperide

Can anyone tell me why I have to take both Metformin and Glimeperide? I am gaining weight as a side effect of the Glimeperide (I think) and struggle not to hypo. No-one every tried just Metformin first. I was immediately put on both. Any thoughts or knowledge anyone? Thank you

Most T2 are now placed on Metformin first then add sulfonylurea if BG do not come down
all depends How high your BG was in the first diagnosed

I was placed on both at when first diagnosed with high BG 35 :shock:
After the hospital helped bring my levels down weeks stay with Insulin ,sent home with Metformin and gliclazide

The glim will make you hypo or feel a false hypo if your BG are coming down form running at high
levels for some time

You need to test BG and talk to your GP if you keep having Hypos BG level 4 or below

Glimeperide
Like all sulfonylureas, glimepiride acts as a secretagogue It lowers blood sugar by stimulating the release of insulin by pancreatic beta cells and by inducing increased activity of intracellular insulin receptors.

Metformin
helps to control the amount of glucose (sugar) in your blood. It decreases the amount of glucose you absorb from your food and the amount of glucose made by your liver. Sometimes glimepiride is only prescribed for short periods. Metformin does not always do much for Bg levels. How much glimepiride are you taking? It often has a drastic effect at firs and then settles down even ceasing to be effecive. Not a good idea to go on suffering hypos though.
Were your levels very high?
