metformin and insulin

Hi all could i get some information please i was only diagnosed in june and have been taking metformin and gliclazide and trying other medication at the moment i am having really bad stomach pains that bad i ended up in A&E over xmas they got that bad i have a hernia aswell and i think they may be agravating it the pain has been really quite bad tothe point i have stopped taking my medication as i have not been eating .would it b possible for me to go on inuslin would that be better for me as i dnt think i can take the stomach pains anymore thanks
 
Hi. First, Metformin can cause stomach problems for quite a few people. It's not normally serious but it's possible it is causing your stomach cramps. If you aren't on the SR (Slow Release) version then try asking your GP to move you to that version. Gliclazide is not normally a problem. If you are not getting good blood sugar control with the Gliclazide then it may be worth discussing insulin with the GP. The GP should be trying three tablets e.g. Metformin, then Gliclazide and then if needed something like Sitagliptin or one of the other diabetes tablets (See NICE Diabetes Pathways doc on the web). If these fail to control the blood sugar then insulin becomes a sensible option. Some GPs, like mine initially, won't prescribe insulin until quite late on, but it gives real control when tablets fail. Note that Metformin will only ever reduce blood sugar a bit. Gliclazide can have a big effect if the pancreas is still working fairly well

Hi thanks for ur reply i have tried the sr metforim and they made me quite sick so had to stop taking them i am curently taking 1 gliclazide a day zicron bt not getting the control i need and quite worried about taking any more with the stomach problems as they are quite bad my doctor recomended i stop taking my diabetic medication till they stopped which they did i was fine for a few days and then started to take my medication againand the stomach pains came bak i have also tired januva aswell wich caused a bad rash and didnt control my levels at all so im thinking they way to go now is insulin as not coping very well with the bad stomach
