metformin and reactive hyperglycemia

Has anyone with reactive hypoglycemia been given metformin and does it cause or have they experienced lactic acidosis?

My endocrinologist was happy that I was taken off metformin, when I was referred.
But I have seen others that their doctor had prescribed, hoping it would benefit or intervene in the process of glucogenisis. Which is known as a liver dump.
Because of the excess insulin whilst going hypo.
It never stopped me going hypo.

As for lactic acidosis, it is a side effect of the drug, in some, and if found, the metformin should be stopped.
With my lactose intolerance I know my doctors picked up on that.
But I was so ill, before diagnosis, cos of the hypos, could have had any disease, I wouldn't have known about it.

Do have a word with your doctor,
Personally, I would have doubts about taking it, with RH.

It was my endo that prescribed them for me. And I already know about the acidosis side effects. They wanted me to go on ozempic and then acterbose and blood pressure meds but those all have adverse side affects and my hypos are not really improving much not sure why as i've changed my diet and cut out most carbs and sugars.

I am a bit worried that your endocrinologist just doesn't understand the science behind RH, or he would understand those meds do not prevent hypoglycaemia and I'm not surprised they have had side effects.
I think that he is of the opinion that you must have some carbs, because of how the majority of people get their energy from. It's either carbs or being in normal BG levels consistently.
There is medical opinion that your brain needs constant glucose for brain health. I have come across this so many times. It's not true. People have either fasted or done without food forcibly, but the brain will still work.
I met this sort of resistance from my endocrinologist, but my health improved so much, I did manage to convince him that not having carbs as much as possible, was the best treatment.

I was part of a trial for a drug that was effective for the first couple of years,.
This was because the drug increased my first phase insulin response. So the spike would be lower than without the drug. The effect of this would reduce the trigger for the second phase, and need less insulin from it, so the symptoms would be less, unfortunately, if enough carbs were eaten, I would still go hypo.
But there was other benefits as good weight loss, less symptoms especially if you went hypo.
And if you mistakenly ate carbs you were unaware of.
The drug is Sitagliptin. It is a diabetic drug that does lower your spike, because of the increased production of insulin in the first phase insulin response.
There is a YouTube video, about the drug having an effect in the U.S.

I'm off the drug now for a few years, because it had done it's work, and on keto, my energy levels were brilliant and didn't need carbs.

If you are anything like me, any carbs will trigger the reaction.
And I would seriously think about it.
I don't get hypos
No symptoms.
Just very good energy levels and a good health report from my last review.
I'm seventy next March. And I can't emphasise it more, that the only tablets I'm on is aspirin.

It's the carbs!

Would you recommend Sitagliptin? so as to control the spikes and hypos or just continue with diet? I can't do full keto as i cannot digest the fibrous meats such as steaks and i don't want to eat bacon and sausages as they tend to be highly processed the same holds true for lunch meats.
 
I would recommend both to be honest.
keto does not mean you eat a lot of the meat you mentioned, I cook all my meat fresh from my butcher..
there are other proteins and fats that we can have, even some vegan, fish and seafood etc.
I will tag @JoKalsbeek to give you the nutritional thingy.
you can only give sitagliptin a try, even in the short term, and of course if it doesn't help, you are already on the way with carbs reduction. But the idea behind going keto, is to keep your BG levels in and around normal levels So we don't trigger the reaction.
That is the best treatment of all.

There's plenty of meats that are quite excellent and not over-processed. At one point I was emailing back and forth with a butcher about what my options were, they're more than happy to help if you have questions or special requests.

Hi
I had a glucose tolerance test , then doctors ignored my hypo and I was diagnosed with diabetes.
At first , my doctor prescribed me Metformin, then I became so ill. I could not explain it well enough, but I had a fatigue and doomed feeling, so scared , I thought I was going to die. I told my doctor and stopped it immediately. It could be it .
