Hi,

For the past 4 days i have had terrible stomach cramps and diarrhea. I have seen on some of the posts this can be linked to metformin (i take 2X 500 a day). I have been on holiday but go back to work tomorrow and, i wanted to know if maybe cutting out all carbs for the next few days while i am at work will help or stop this?

Thanks in advance

Hi Vicky,

Try asking your GP for the slow release Metformin as it is much kinder to people who have gastro side effects to the normal one. I had side effects to the normal one, they weren't severe but were moderately bad and so I switched to the slow release and have not had any problems at all apart from some nausea for the first few days while I got used to them.

Diagnosed with GD in 2010, Completely disappeared postpartum. Re-diagnosed December 2012 with type 1.5 diabetes, age 26, BMI 22 currently controlled by only Metformin, 500mg twice a day.

I spoke to her yesterday and was asked to wait a week and see if i still have it. If i do she will swap me, just don't want to go into work tomorrow and have the embarrassing problem of cramps and keeping having to go to the loo lol.

Lol yeh I get what you mean, I was on the normal Metformin for 3 months before I switched as I kept hoping the side effects would go away but they didn't and I was losing weight due to not digesting my food due to the gastro problems straight after eating, it was like having IBS!

The slow release is apparently more expensive, hence their reluctance to prescribe it straight off but if u see no improvement just go back again and tell them as its awful having to constantly be near a loo! Lol
