Metformin and type 2 remission

Type of diabetes
Type 2
I was newly diagnosed in April as type 2 (although they’ve just done tests for LADA that haven’t come back yet). My HbA1c was 84 and they prescribed Gliclazide, which I didn’t take because of the risk of hypos when I’m running. However I’d been training for a marathon and consuming much higher sugars and carbs than normal so immediately after the marathon stopped all sugars and pretty much all carbs with regular finger prick testing. My HbA1c has just come back as 50. The consultant has prescribed metformin so that I can consume carbs whilst training for my next marathon in October however I’ve just had a week on holiday where I’d eaten some heavy carbs and not done much ruining at all and my finger prick tests are pretty much where they were previously. My question is whether I should put off the metformin and see how things go for a while? I’d rather not take medication if I can self control? Cheers for any advice

Have you looked at athletes who are low-carb?
Some of the research appears to me to be flawed as it did not allow time for fat adaption, ie swapping participants from high carb to low carb or vs but a growing number of athletes have gone onto low carb diets.

Thanks yeah I have. Very interesting. I’m actually up to 15 miles with just water and fasting runs pre breakfast.

I remember the pasta parties my husband used to go to the night before marathons. Now apparently that was the wrong thing to do. Now the famous Prof Tim Noakes who was an athlete coach apologised to the nation saying he gave them all the wrong information and guidance. Protein and fat gives a much better and prolonged performance whether you’re a diabetic or not. He said even in his 70s his body composition has changed by eating low carb, moderate protein and high fat. He has some great YouTube videos

What’s the longest run you have done keto? And how did you fuel during the run? Or did you? Thanks

So the consensus would be not to take the metformin, stay low carb, get the next HbA1c to normal and use carbs sparingly where necessary during the longer runs?

I run 5 times a week, usually 10k training run . Normally I will go for a run 90 minutes after a low carb breakfast. For example a plate of scrambled eggs. Today I did a 12k run , I have noticed you do feel more tired on low carb keto, but within an hour or so, I’m back to normal. I think anything of over 12 K run I would need to fuel possibly whilst running.
