Hi there.
my husband is newly diagnosed and has to take 500mg of metformin at breakfast and 1000mg at 6pm. What time in the morning is best.

Thanks
cazuk

Time is not as important as taking it with food. I would suggest he takes it in the middle of his breakfast to minimise any possible side effects.

Thanks a lot he takes it now approx 9am with breakfast I was just wondering if it should be earlier as that is the best time for him and carer.

As i understand it, Metformin is not a treatment for diabetes in the sense that you would take an aspirin to cure a headache. It merely assists the limited insulin that the body produces, in a Type 2, to deal with the BG levels which are boosted by the intake of food. Hence the importance of taking it in the middle of your larger meals.

If you need any more help on diet or exercise please keep asking questions.

metformin has the side effect of giving you the runs. Over time many people adjust and it stops having this effect. Each person is different as to the time of day they take it as to when it minimises the side effects. for me it is first time in at break fast, then lunchtime, but nothing in the evening. This works for me. For others it will be different.

As Madbazoo said metformin best at mealtimes in between mouthfuls of food. Routine also good idea for mealtimes and for me go for breakfast 7-9a.m lunch 12-2.00pm and evening meal around 5-7p.m. My diabetic team suggested that as my mealtimes were all over the shop and that's if I ate at all. Good luck and one day it will all fall into place.

I take it in the middle of my breakfast and the same with my evening meal. I'm fortunate in not having suffered any of the side-effects but I know there are many more who have.

If your hubby's taking his 1,500mg of Metformin in 500mg tablets, might I suggest he takes one tablet during each of 3 meals, rather than 2, during the day, e.g. breakfast, lunch and evening meal? That would even-out the dose and I'd have thought it should reduce the potential for side-effects.
