Metformin Blues

Well-Known Member
I've got the Metformin Blues
All I seem to do is poo
No matter what I do
I'm always running to the loo.

I've got the Metformin Blues
It really takes its toll
Always running for the bowl
I'm nearly out of toilet roll.

I've got the Metformin Blues
My butt is getting sore
Family pounding at the door
But I'm back for just one more.

I've got the Metformin Blues
I really don't know how
All I can say is, "Wow!"
I've got to go again right now!

Oh dear, oh dear. Very clever song, but unpleasant to live through.

How long have you been taking the metformin for? If it's more than a few days, your problem should have settled by now. Are you taking the normal or SR version?

i saw a specialist to reduce weight (without diabetes). the professor prescribe metformin for me. so i think metformin does helps in losing weight.

I just completed my 3rd week (up to 1500 mg now, starting 2000 mg tomorrow). The poem was just a bit of a joke. :) I do go far more than I used to, but it's tapered off. I have IBS as well, so I knew I was in for a bit of a rough time from the get-go! I take the SR Gloucophage.

What my doctor said was that it "helps a bit", and "at least you won't gain weight while you're on it". So perhaps it helps some more than others. I seem to be losing 1lb a week (with moderate carbs).

I think your doctor isn't giving the best guidance for you as a non-diabetic? Metformin did start out life as a slimming drug but NICE no longer approves it's use for slimming. It does help with insulin resistance and slightly reduces the liver's production of glucose. If your have IBS I would have thought Met was best avoided; even the SR version. Why are you having only 'moderate' carbs and not 'low' carbs? Have you set yourself a daily carb limit; perhaps 150gm/day to start with?

I am a diabetic, T2. It was the other poster (called "mine") who responded to me above, and who was prescribed it "without diabetes".

I have set myself a daily limit of 100 carbs per day. I guess that is considered "low" rather than "moderate", but when I see posts that some only take 50 or less, I think what I am doing is "moderate". :)

Hi. Sorry about confusing you with the other poster. 100gm/day is good and better than me. There aren't any rules but I think most would say that was low-carb. Hopefully the reduced carb will gradually work and may be you could stop the Met by agreement with the GP if you still have 'The Blues'

No problem. :) I hope to eventually be able not to take it, or at least reduce it if possible. I'd like to go even lower-carb but for now I am just getting used to the whole idea. :)

Perhaps when I get more used to this much lower carb (for me) way of eating, I can reduce it even further. Some days I do go lower. I was raised on pasta! So this is all very new to me. :)

Funny, should be put to music lol and would go viral lol. On a serious note I was taking a lot of Metformin years ago and they made me absolutely ill for 2 years. I had more than half of my colon removed after I had septicaemia and tissue necrosis and wondered why I was even put on them in the first place. I told my GP that I couldn't tolerate Metformin and he wondered why the DN prescribed them at all. It is a good idea to read the Patient Information Leaflets if you have any stomach or bowel problems with Metformin and other oral anti-diabetic medications !

I found it was low potassium, increase potassium levels and the terrible cramps will stop and visits to the loo, Yogurt, milk, baked potato, apricots
Beans, banana, tuna cod or salmon, tomato paste ( teaspoon only ) its worth persevering if you get desired results

OMG that is awful. I'm certainly not that bad, thank goodness.

I do eat full fat, Greek youghurt nearly every morning, with about 1/3 of a banana with it. Hopefully the cramps will stop soon.
