I've been put on 1000mg twice per day is this a lot‍♂️

I took 1 x 500 mg twice a day when I was on Metformin, that helped me a lot to get off it after a couple of years.

2000 mg is about the maximum daily dose I think.

Thanks for your replies folks.

I believe it is at the top end of dosage. I am type 2 and have been taking 2x 1000 daily for about 3 years. I do not ever seem to suffer from medical side effects, but this prescription should be reviewed regularly. I am tested 6 monthly which I find to be satisfactory for me. If you have any side effects or changes in your general health, possibly caused by taking it alongside other medication, report it immediately to your GP

Each person is different. Dosage depends on bady size, your glucose numbers, and doctors shoudl take into consideration how much exercise you do, how many carbs per meal or per day you eat, your fasting glucose number, too. It is important to test your blood glucose more often at first, so you can see how it effects fasting numbers as well as pre and post-prandial numbers, etc until you know what it is doing or not doing to you. Best of luck!

All down to you and the GP. I've been on 2000mg daily for probably over 15 years now. I'm Type 1, and went onto it because of insulin resistance. If I forget to take a dose, it's very obvious on doing a blood test, the insulin just doesn't kick in !
I started on ordinary Metformin, however within 14 days it was obvious it was causing a high level of stomach issues, never knew if I was going to pass wind or pass more !. Moving to the SR variety fortunately cured that.

I am a 5’ tall, 120 lb woman. The doc over dosed me on a full dose of 1000 mg extended release metformin morning and evening, for a total of 2000 mg metformin ER per day. I had multiple lactic acidosis attacks and still my doc didn’t change my medicine. I cut the dose in half, myself. Over the last three years I have gone very low carb at ~17 net grams of carbs per meal. I have been able to stop Januvia all together and control the diabetes on only a half dose of metformin. I have not had anymore bouts of lactic acidosis, since.

I thought it was high tbh, thanks for the information X

Will do, and thank you mate

I had a lot of nausea with Metformin and was changed to slow release which is much better. When I was put on Gliclazide, I had the same problem again and I am now on slow release with those too.

2000mg is the maximum does suggested by NICE (at one time it was up to 3000mg). Divided doses of 500mg are recommended for standard metformin but modified release is often 2 x 1000g
