Hi all - I'll try and keep it short, but here is the back story!
I was diagnosed last May, put on two Metformin and then after a couple of weeks up to three a day. After a few days on 3x Metformin, I started to get really low readings 2 and below, which made me feel shaky and faint. GP (who is also diabetes specialist) put the dose back down to 2x Metformin and readings were good.
BUT - my readings have gone up over the last 4-5 months...latest HbA1c is 7.4. I saw DN who spoke to GP and they've said to up the dose to 3x Metformin.
And they've confused me about what time of day is best to take them.
Two at night, one in the morning? Two in the morning, one at night? Currently I take one with breakfast, one with dinner....can I just add in the third at lunch time?
TIA

I think you will find if it's standard met. take a tab with your 3 meals. if it's the SR/xr it doesn't matter that much. I'm on 2x500 and take both at breakfast

HI, thanks for replying - I am on standard Metformin, and take it with meals to avoid stomach problems...but DN seemed insistent on me taking two tablets together which has given me an upset stomach!

When I was on 3 x 850 mg metformin, I used to take them with each meal, 3 times a day. I'm now on 2000 mg a day so I take 2 x 500 mg at breakfast and 2 x 500 mg with my evening meal. It was a bit of a drag to have to carry them round with me. But if you can't tolerate 2 x 500 mg, then you will have to take them three times a day

I'd take standard met one with each meal, especialy if i have gut problems, tell the Dr and ask for slow release

Metformin alone: At first, 500 milligrams (mg) two times a day taken with the morning and evening meals, or 850 mg a day taken with the morning meal. Your doctor may increase your dose if needed until your blood sugar is controlled. Later, your doctor may want you to take 500 or 850 mg two to three times a day with meals. However, the dose is usually not more than 2550 mg per day.

Thanks for all your replies! I'll spread them throughout the day and see how I get on......I'm on my third lot of anti-biotics for a urine infection, so my usual cast iron stomach is feeling a bit delicate at the moment!
