Do I have to inform the DVLA or my car insurance company that I now take Metformin?

If you were a Type 1 Diabetic on Insulin then it is a legal requirement to inform the DVLA. You would then be required to show that you have got good overall control of you diabetes for several weeks, without going Hypo (usually a DR's report). If you happened to be a Train driver / Commercial Airline Pilot or HGV PSV driver then it would probably end your working career .Others on this site will no doubt shed further light on this.
However should you happen to be Type 2 (on Metformin which dosn't cause Hypo's by it's own) and your overall B/G control is good, then it isn't a legal requirerment to inform the DVLA. I would however say that you should notify your Insurance Company and inform them that you are diabetic. Generally it will not effect the premium or make restrictions on the insurance policy, but it is good practice to inform them and get a 'WRITTEN' reply back that you have done so. We all know how Insurance Companies will try to duck out of any responsibility should you need to make any subsequent claim for whatever reason in the future.
At one time the EU was considering BANNING ALL DIABETICS of whatever type from driving in Europe, but common sense eventually won the day and this idea was dropped.

Hope this helps - Best regards - Lazybones

Yes, you must tell the insurance company that your have DB and on tablets. You don't need to tell the DVLA as there is no hypo risk with Metformin
