Metformin in pregnancy

Hey! I'm new to the site but really glad I found it! basically, I had a baby a year ago and discovered I had gestational diabetes at 28 weeks. It was managed with insulin and all was well. I am now pregnant again and have been referred to the Diabetic team even though I am only 7 weeks. i have been monitoring my sugar levels over the last week, and as my morning reading is higher than they'd like, I have been told to start taking Metformin, with a view to avoid insulin use later on. Having just read the leaflet that comes with the meds, it says that it is not usually used in pregnancy - insulin is, and therefore to consult your GP as they will prob take you off it! i am now confused and worried that it will cause the unborn bubba harm! Does anyone have any experience with this and if so I would be really glad of your opinion!

Cheers!

Hi Sarah
Congratulations to you all. I wouldn't of thought they would put you on metformin if there was a high risk, unfortunately i don't know much about this, all i can say is ring your Gp and chat to them as stress will cause your sugars levels to rise, let alone your hormones.
Please seek medical advice rather than worry.
Hope all goes well
Tracey

Thank you, Tracey69! I think you are prob right. A quick call tomorrow will put my mind at rest.I wouldnt mind finding out either if anyone on Metformin has suffered any adverse side effects like vomiting / loose bowels etc? Just what I need at this time of year!!!!

I'm not pregnant, but I can confirm that vomiting and loose bowels are side effects of Metformin - or as it is sometimes called - Metfartin.

For most people, this is just a temporary thing. It helps if you take the tablets with food.
