Metformin Questions

I've been on the forum a couple of months but haven't posted much but I would like to ask if you can help if that's OK.... I have been put on Metformin after a few months of trying diet and exercise to control my diabetes which was diagnosed end of December. I have had a read of loads of other posts so some of my questions have been answered. Thank goodness for the forum otherwise I don't know what I'd have done so thank you. I have had stomach cramps and a very upset stomach plus nausea and have also felt really bloated at times which I have read is quite common but I wonder if anyone can help with something else. I have had clinical depression for years and was managing reasonably but since taking metformin I have felt just awful again and was wondering if anyone knows of problems of this type whether metformin causes this or there is some kind of drug interaction (I'm on high doses of antidepressants)? I hope my doctor would have checked any interaction but could have overlooked it, it's possible I guess. I have had a little look online but couldn't find much. Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem? Thank you and sorry for rambling on.

Hi and welcome. Are you taking Metformin SR (Slow Release) or the standard version? If not on SR do ask the GP to swap you to that as it should avoid much or all of the bloating. It may be that it would also help with you not feeling well. Metformin normally has few drug interactions and is a well tolerated drug (apart for the bloating which some have with the plain version) but there are exceptions. Do try the SR version and take it from there.

Thank you for your reply. I am not taking slow release so I'll speak to the nurse next time I see her (next week). Hopefully that can sort out some of the problems I'm having. I don't really know what else to do, I feel horrid!
