Metformin side effect

I know many of you probably have had the same experience as me taking Metformin (i.e. having the runs) but mine has now gotten to the point where I'm scared to go out just in case :problem: I spoke to my new GP last week (I've just moved home and sadly have had to leave my old GP practice)and told him that this was now causing me problems but all he said was that I needed to take the Metformin and offered no help or advice on how I'm supposed to live a normal life when every time I go out I'm in danger of having to find the nearest loo asap.He wasn't at all helpful and even told me it wasn't necessary for me to check my bg levels as this could be quite confusing! As I've been diagnosed for the past 3 years, it isn't as though I'm new to all this, but the "runs" have become worse over the past few months.

I also told him that my bg levels were the same regardless of whether I take the Metformin or not (usually anywhere between 7 and 10) which is when he told me I must continue taking it. Surely it isn't right to take something which has such an adverse effect? As I also have to take Raapril for blood pressure, surely having the runs so badly means that the bp meds are going straight through me or am I worrying needlessly?

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Don't be fobbed off, ask for an alternative drug as there is one I'm not sure what it is called but I know there is one. If you are not happy with the GP you could also contact your nearest hospital and ask them if they have a special clinic I understand that most do. Then take it from there see if you can be dealt with in the hospital rather than GP as you are unhappy with how they are dealing with the situation. If that is not an option then think about changing your GP practice.
I had problems to start with but find that if i take metformin with or after meals then its not too bad and i try to follow LCHF. I feel loads better for not eating bread, spuds, rice and pasta especially.

I find wheat doesn't agree with metformin. I've cut wheat out and found my tummy problems disappeared. Also the more carbs you eat, the more wind you have with metformin.

The side effect of eating no wheat (and not replacing it with gluten free varieties) is that you eat less carbs and this is good for your BS levels.

Thank you both for your replies. There a GP who is supposed to specialise in diabetes so as I'm new to the practice I'll ask to see her next time. I know I do get bloated if I eat anything with wheat in it so I'm trying to cut it out to see if that will make any difference.

Thanks again.
