Metformin Side Effects

Hello all,

I have recently been prescribed Metformin after managing with diet and exercise alone for 9 years. I'm a bit gutted but have finally succumbed to meds. I'm type II, follow a low carb diet, and exercise plenty. I'm just 8 days in on 500mg x1 per day. I can manage the stomach issues but I seemed to be completely depleted of energy. I'm just wondering if others are finding this as it wasn't a side effect that was highlighted to me. I am a keen runner up to and around half marathon but I'm finding it a real struggle to run 10k since starting the tablets. Feeling pretty vacant and a little tight chested at times, any advice or tips on how to manage gratefully accepted.

Welcome to the forums.

Dr Google isn't mentioning your symptoms but I don't think you should suffer in silence. Contact your GP for advice. Also, have you considered the possibility that you are slow onset T1 (LADA) rather than T2? Yes, we have people on here who have been misdiagnosed T2 for ten years before the LADA diagnosis.

Funnily enough my diabetes nurse referred me to the hospital as she suspected LADA but they decided it was more likely that I was Type II as I'd had gestational diabetes x 3. I had a negative test for other types of diabetes 10 years ago as I never really fit the profile for gestational or type II. Perhaps I'll speak to her again!
