Hi all,

I've been taking Metformin 500mg in the morning and 500mg in the evening and although its been keeping my BG between 4 and 7 mmol the side effects weren't getting my better so I asked my GP to switch me to the slow release Metformin which has been done and insteadv taking 500mg in the morning and 500mg in the evening I've been told to take both 500mg in the evening and none all day and since I've been doing this my BG has shot up to 7 -8 mmol even though I've been eating the same food?? Has anyone experienced this or think it might or might not be the slow release??? Really confused!!

Diagnosed with GD in 2010, Completely disappeared postpartum. Re-diagnosed December 2012 with type 1.5 diabetes, age 26, BMI 23 currently controlled by only Metformin, 500mg twice a day.

I soon found that divided dose worked much better ...1/2 with breakfsast and the other 1/2 just before my evening meal.

On SR me form in taking 2 x 1000mg after tea every evening tried the other runs, swelling throat really bad effects

I've also found that dividing the dose of Metformin SR worked better. The slow release seems to be more effective over 12 hours than 24 hours.

I've noticed that most medicines that are effective over 24 hours tend to have granules that dissolve at different rates rather than being a single tablet. Single tablet slow release medications tend to relase a dose of medication in a shorter time and their effectiveness is limited to around 12 hours. Also metformin tends to increase the speed that food moves through your body.
