Sorry, had to report post. You can't give away medications that are prescripted. Even if you gave it away to someone that were diabetic it would still be illegal. Only your physician have the right to prescripte medications like metformin. I know you meant it well, but chances are that someone can abuse this opportunity.

Anyway, welcome to the site :)

Yes take them back to the chemist that is the only legal and safe way to dispose of unused prescription medications you should not put them in the bin or flush them down the the toilet even.

Taking them back to a pharmacist is the correct way, but not all of them seem to accept them. When I had to return a number of my mothers meds, two chemist refused to take them.

Disposal of Unwanted Medicines

Pharmacies are obliged to accept back unwanted medicines from patients. The pharmacy will, if required by NHS England or the waste contractor, sort them into solids (including ampoules and vials), liquids and aerosols, and the local NHS England team will make arrangements for a waste contractor to collect the medicines from pharmacies at regular intervals. Additional segregation is also required under the Hazardous Waste Regulations.
PSNC has worked with the Department of Health, the Environment Agency and others, to prepare guidance for pharmacies. The most authoritative guidance is published by the Department of Health as 07-01 Safe Management of Healthcare Waste. This has been revised and updated in April 2011 and is available from the Space for Health website.

No, please do not give away any of your medication which was prescribed for you. The pharmacy can advise you.

Don't worry about it, Jules.

Not every report is necessarily any sort of "black mark" or big issue.

To be clear, I wasn't the Mod who edited your post, but I think it's pretty clear your thread was posted with your best of intentions at heart.
