I'm a 23 year old type 1 for 10 years now. I've had an insulin pump now for 6 months after trying desperately to get my sugars under control through multiple dose. My sugar levels still aren't as good as they should be even though I seem to try so hard! I had my annual review last week. I have a bmi of 22 and I am being put on metformin....is this normal? I'm definately not overweight and have a very healthy low carb diet. I've gained a couple of kilos since my last annual review but this is from increased exercise and weight training. Is anyone else in a similar situation? I'm not liking the idea of all the abdominal symptoms associated with the drug and it apparently makes you lose weight. Very confused!! Help!

Sorry to hear of your struggles, especially as you appear to be trying so hard stabalise control. In short my advice would be speak to your consultants and look into changing insulin as this seems the most likely cause of your unbalance.

Metformin isn't only used for weight loss.......it has other documented preventative benefits.
There are other T1's who have been prescribed it for that reason.

If you don't know why you are on it then ask the question of the person who prescribed it.......

I think the train of thought behind putting me on metformin is that I take quite a large amount of insulin for my size and for the amount of carbs that I eat. I take between 22-30 u novorapid per day via my insulin pump. I guess if I am quite insulin resistant than being on metformin would be a good move and help me control my sugar levels with less insulin which is always a good thing. Just not looking forward to gas, nausea and the loss of appetite!

In that case Lisa it is probably a good idea. You could always up the calories a little if you do start to lose weight. There are calorie higher foods which aren't always high in carbs around......

If you get bad side effects ask for the slow release version, that helps for a lot of people.
