hi i'm eileen and been diagnosed type 2 in march.i take metformin 3 times a day and have had alternating bouts of diahorrea and severe constipation since then.have had colonoscopy and doc can find nothing wrong could it be the metformin?my life is a misery and i'm thinking of stopping the tablets to see if that helps.would this do any long term damage?
thanks for any advice i am desperate
eileen

Ho Eileen, this is a very common side effect of metformin. Most people adapt to it over time, but a lot don't. You should go back to the Doc and ask to be switched to slow-release metformin (metformin SR) which has far less side effects.

Hi Eileen, if its making you very uncomfortable and feeling desperate, then I would definetly return to your GP ASAP and let him/her know how it 's affecting you and leaving you feeling.
Am sure they will help you and get you on something you "can" tolerate keeping you free of the gastric/digestive side effects you seem to be suffering with.
Poor you, it can affect some people quite badly. It did with me... Couldnt tolerate it in ANY formula type. It actually made me extremely ill. Took me ages to recover too.
So I can truly feel for you with this one!
Do let us know how you get on if you decide to see the doc about this.

Hi Eileen,

I can totally sympathise with you, I was afraid to go out and felt really ill :( I went back to my GP and he prescribed a drug called Lomotil to slow things down and also changed me to Slow Release Metformin. I had doubts to start with, but really have not looked back since. Please see your GP, I am sure that he will help.

Good luck
