Bin diet controlled until today when doc said he would put me on 500mg Metformin once a day. Told him I was going to India tomorrow and he said that was a good way to lose weight.
Reading about metformin it seems the runs are to be avoided, has the Doc been a bit negligent?

For me, Metformin had the opposite effect and I had to take Sena alongside the 500g Metformin for two weeks. Thereafter, I had no problem even with four times increased usage. I cannot see that a GP's prescribing of Metformin can be negligent given that it is a well proven drug and the side effects (more often "the runs") are well documented.

I've found it to be totally fine, providing I take it mid meal, as opposed to with a meal.
By that I mean that, I eat half my meal ( breakfast) wash it down with a pint of iced water, then I continue.
Apart from a bit of bloating and a gripey tum for the first few days, all's been well.

Hi psteague
How long are you going to India for ? if it only for a few weeks I would leave the Met until you come back ,if you have managed by diet another few weeks will do no harm and the first few days on Met can be a bit dodgy ,as in sudden need for the loo TMI! Not good if you are traveling Enjoy your trip

Thanks Carol. Just got back from India without reading your post until now. Glad someone understood why I thought Doc was a bit negligent.
Having weighed it up I did think it best to defer starting the drug and took first dose today. Glad I did as I spent 5 days looking at toilet walls.
As for India, what a terrible place, Cruelty to anything that moves on an enormous scale and that includes the people.
We don't know what poverty means in this country.
Taj Mahal, you won't see anything more than on a postcard, as inside its dark and a death trap of steps, as the police shuffle you on a circuit of the tombs whilst blowing their whistles for a reason beyond me. Never again.
Everyone who lauds India, take your rose coloured specs off.
