hi i need some advise please my mother has had type 2 for over two years and was given a slow realease 1000 metformin, i have descovered she has been spliting it into 4 as it to large t swallow, is this ok to take it like this .

I would double check with her doc but I can't see it being a problem. Lots of people use pill splitters. They are a big tablet actually !

As they are the slow release, she shouldn't cut them up as it defeats the object of them being slow release. They do come in a 500 mg size which should be smaller.

I think they are not coated, well mine aren't, so breaking them should be OK but you need to check with a pharmacist

Just read the leaflet. I take Glucophage SR. It says 'Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water, do not chew'.
