Hi my name is ange and i have been diabetic type 1 for almost 34 years, I was rushed into hospital in oct 08 with dka although 1st time in 33+ years very frightening to say the least. My blood sugars are still all over the show although my insulin doses have been jiggled about numerous times by my practice nurse and diabetes specialist nurse + i have been diagnosed with lipodystrophy (insulin flooding in my tum & legs) Iam now waiting for the DSN and consultants at my local hospital to discuss what to do with me next although the DSN is on about putting me on metformin as well as my insulin( humalog x3- lantus x1) although i tried that bout 10 years ago and i had loads of hypo's so i am a bit reluctant to go down that road again. Life with diabetes has never got me down but just lately i must admit it is as it is very hard to juggle being a mum to my 6 year old plus going to work 20 hours a week and feeling as grotty as i am at the min due to hypo's. I was just wondering if anyone else has had this kind of problem or how they go on with 4 injections aday and metformin? Also i was advised quit a few years ago not to inject in my arms but reading in balance magazine ive noticed that you still can, im getting short of sites to inject what with the lipodystrophy so do my night injection in my bum which i find quite difficult sometimes any one got any ideas!!!

Hi

I am on 4 a day and one metformin but I am rather new at this and probably can't help muc. I ahve just done the DAFNE and it has helped me a lot. Only main problem I have is the usual metformin type issues. I know how hard juggling life can be - I work full time, am studying accountancy and have a 4 1/2 year old. I also know how scary a DKA can be, I was admitted with this on diagnosis and it took them a while to stablise me (I was in the High Dependancy Unit for 4 days! and the main wards for another 2 before they would let me go home!)

I have to say I write in my diary a lot when I am down. I also have been known to vent on line if feeling down, these forums are good for that and for getting support from those who understand.
My hubby is worse than useless as far as discussing how I am feeling is concerned - he seems to think that as long as I am not is hospital then all is well - doesn't understand how your BG can make you feel, too many hypos - depressed / too high - fed up! :?

Hopefully when the DSN / hosp manage to help sort your levels out, and reduce the hypos, you will start to feel a bit better. Re Arm injection - only came accross it -never tried it.

Take care

Louise

Hi ange-eren,

I think the reason for the low response is that the problem you are experiencing is not very common. I have been a member of this forum for longer than most and I can't remember ever having come across a case of lipodystrophy before. So that makes you unique among us, which I appreciate isn't a great deal of help for you when it comes to advice!
