From my own experience, some Type 1 diabetics, (including myself) are in this in-between phase of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, which is called LADA.
To me, LADA is semantics in the sense that it is, just, a slowly progressing Type 1 diabetes.
During this phase, Type 1 diabetics demonstrate insulin resistance which is a characteristic of Type 2 diabetics. Some doctors (including mine while I was in the LADA stage) prescribe Metformin in order to assist with the insulin resistance.
Recent studies have shown, however, that Metformin in Type 1 diabetics produces no results. Yet, when I changed from a basal/Metformin scheme to a basal/bolus scheme and was instructed to stop metformin, I had to raise my basal insulin by 1-2 units so, I tend to believe that Metformin did provide some assistance…
Other than that, Metformin, marketed under the name Glucophage, is a nice pill (a little big to swallow) which originates from the French lilac which is a nice, little flower (looks a bit like an orchid) used in folk medicine for several centuries. Metformin is also used in the treatment of polycystic ovary syndrome while limited evidence suggests metformin may prevent the cardiovascular disease and cancer complications of diabetes. It also helps overweight people in their effort to lose weight.
It is a cute pill overall.
I have stopped it but, from time to time, I am considering to, maybe, start it again. Even if it does not assist with my diabetes, I could perceive it a bit like a Vitamin...
