I'm resently diagnosed and have been told to monitor my levels and prescribed metformine 1000mg twice a day if required. I have been ok with this but today I was at 21.3 so took my 1000mg and now 3hrs later it's still 20.6 & I have not eaten. should I take more metformine to try and lower it? (have tried to speak with my doc but he's unavailable until tomorrow)

Hi. Metformin tends to work over days and weeks and you should not expect short term changes in tablets taken to have an immediate effect. At your sugar level I would be taking the maximum dose the doctor has prescribed for you 'permanently'. Note that Metformin won't reduce your sugars by more than 1 or 2 mmol points or so. Diet has to be the main methosd of attack together with exercise and there is a lot of information on the forum with regard to reducing your carb intake as it's carbs that in the main create the blood sugar. How old are you? Are you overweight? If you are quite young and not overweight then there are other diabetes possibilities to be considered.

Hi. Thanks for the info. Steroids are a known cause of diabetes so one would assume that's why you have the problem. I'm not qualified to comment on steroid induced diabetes but it sounds like your GP is onto it. The low-carb diet is still relevant for all of us and with a meter you can note the effect of various foods.
