Having been on Metformin SR 1000mg twice daily for over 3 years. I recieved a letter from my GP surgery accompanied by a NHS letter stating due to coatings they was replacing my tablets with a cheaper version to save the NHS money.

That's what the surgery said when I telephoned the new tablets was none generic????. . A lot cheaper tablet. I've only been with this GP 6 months. My previous GP was registered 50 years plus.

I'm all for saving money for the NHS but let me share a true story and very frightinting experience that lasted 18 months back in 2014.

I stared loosing my voice for no apparent reason it would come and go with no other symptoms. It would last from minutes to hours to days no pattern.

Having visited my GP on many many occasions they was clueless to give me a diagnoses.

After several months I was sent to my Hospital to see the Specialists and had the camera down my throat. During the conversation with the specialists he asked what current medication I was taking.

I explained about 18 months ago when my throat problems started my GP had taken me off Omerprazole 20 mg once daily to a cheaper brand of tablet.

At that moment the Specialists put the his pen down looked at me and said " That sounds like the problemn" even before the camera procedure was carried out.

I was speechless but this time relieved after the Specialists put the camera down said your throats clear no abdomalities.

The specialists telephoned my GP surgery, the next day I was put back on Omerprazole increased does to 20mg twice a day.

Never had a bit of trouble since that day.

The point I'm making the Specialists explained not all medicines and tablets fit all. However my body had adapted to Omeraprazle and just by changing my tablet for a cheaper or non generic brand my problems began.

I contacted my new surgery last week after speaking to the Pharmacy and my prescription has been returned to Metformin.

Just wondered how many people have been approached by there GP surgery to give up Metorfomin.

I’m not on any drugs for my T2 but I had an issue with Valsartan a BP drug. There was a shortage of 40mg pills which was my normal dosage so he gave me twice as many 20mg instead. After just 3 days my face became puffy and my skin was really sore - apparently the coatings are different on the 20mg than the 40mg. I was prescribed Candasartan after that an£ had no issues.
