Vanity, thy name is (diabetic) woman! :P

I have a load of weddings coming up this summer, and want to look fresh-faced as possible, especially as I am NOT the person getting married. I'm thinking about having a facial treatment before the functions and was wondering about micro-dermabrasion. This takes off outer layers of skin and encourages new growth of skin, thus you end up looking more radiant, better pores, etc etc etc. :)

However, I'm wondering whether diabetes might cause some problems with this treatment due to the problems with healing. I've never been a great one for scars healing, even before my diabetes (I have very pale skin) but having the outer layers of skin removed shouldn't cause any problems - right?

Anyone have any idea about this?

(And before anyone asks, I have good control - last H1AC 6.5 - and am otherwise healthy.)

Hi Becca :)

I have microdermabrasion regularly and have never had any problems with it. There isn't anything that needs to heal - it's just the old skin cells that get removed. My skin isn't even sore afterwards. I get a face mask afterwards as part of the treatment. Like you I have pale skin, very sun sensitive, but after the treatment my face isn't even red. Don't go sunbathing straight away afterwards though! The main difference between us is that you are type 1 and I am type 2. What you need to do is to ask the beautician (or whoever does the treatment) in advance if this treatment is OK for you. I am sure this will have been covered in their training. Good luck :)

Any questions - you can PM me :)

Thanks Daisy1! :D

Glad to hear that diabetics are OK for it - I'll definitely ask the beautician when I go. Doesn't sound like there should be any problem though. Just because we're diabetic doesn't mean we shouldn't look fabulous.

Hi Becca :) I didn't say that all diabetics are OK for dermabrasion - I just said that it was fine for me and didn't think there should be any problem. Each person is different and everyone has different skin. Some skins may not be suitable - diabetic or not. My beautician does know I have diabetes. A good beautician will look at your skin very thoroughly before doing any treatment of any sort and if you always go to the same one she will already know your skin well. The process is like sand blasting with a very fine silica (I think) sand. You have to keep your eyes and mouth closed and hopefully the bonnet will cover your ears as I often find sand in mine  I hope you will look great afterwards :) Have it done a few days before to give your skin time to settle down. Don't expect miracles though. It doesn't take 10 years off my age

Potential side effects of microdermabrasion are minimal and this is a very safe procedure. Potential drawbacks are very limited in that microderm only affects the epidermis, which is the outermost skin layer. Common minor, temporary side effects include slight skin tightness, redness, bruising, and sensitivity. As a general rule, the greater the potential benefits with a cosmetic treatment, the greater the potential risks and side effects. The possible risks with more aggressive treatments like dermabrasion and laser are much greater than microdermabrasion.

I am a beauty therapist myself and trained in microdermabrasion. when treating diabetics I would go easy and work out your skin tolerance so obviously always inform your therapist of your diabetes and a good therapist would go gentle for first few sessions and judge from there.
You can adjust the settings on microdermabrasion machines to suit your clients.
Microdermabrasion is fantastic though, best facial around. Xxx
