Worried I am diabetic. I am 15. For the past few months I've been feeling exhausted, went to doctor 6 weeks ago, ran some tests, said it was stress. For the past week or so I've been dizzy and extremely thirsty. Have an appointment in a week's time, is it ok to wait this long if I suspect diabetes or should I try to be seen earlier? Anyone able to tell me the symptoms they had before they were diagnosed would be helpful.

HI Kitty, go to Llyods the chemist if possible and ask to to be tested for diabetes, little tip try and do a 12 hour fast before you do, if you have high blood sugar levels basically you will probably have diabetes, when I did my first test for it my sugar levels were at like 25, and I was sent straight to hospital to the diabetic ward. If you have been having leg cramp during the night this also is an indication of it, have you lost much weight recently? constantly needing to go to the toilet? get to a chemist asap and get a test.

So I went to the doctor this morning and described symptoms. Tested
my urine for glucose, was negative. Put down dizziness to a virus. Is a urine test enough to determine diabetes or should he have done a finger prick test?

He should have done a finger prick test, and ideally sent you away to have some more blood tests. Even if it's not diabetes, you need to get a diagnosis. I had similar issues as a teenager. Are you able to get one of your parents or another adult to come with you and help remind the doctor that you deserve to be taken seriously?

Also, see if you can find out what the results of those earlier blood tests were. Especially the glucose one.

Lloyds can't do it if you are under 16. I would ask if you could take a urine sample to the Drs so that the nurse can test and see if any glucose, or ketones in it. If they find anything they will ring you and book you in for a blood test. When you see your gp ask to do a finger prick test.
