Hi all, hope you're well.

I had my diabetic eye screening at noon yesterday. My left eye kept 'shrinking back' so there were 3 attempts made before a suitable image was captured.

Since leaving the clinic I have had a severe migraine. The whole left side of my head is hurting and painkillers 4 hourly aren't taking the edge off at all.

I've been diabetic 10 years and have had regular eye screening but have never had a migraine triggered by having it done..
Has anyone ever experienced this?

I've found I'm more sensitive to the light than I use to be but not had a migraine, but looking on the NHS website about the eye screening service it says the following about side-effects:

Side effects
In very rare cases, the eye drops can cause a sudden pressure increase within the eye. This requires prompt treatment at an eye unit.

The symptoms of a pressure increase are:

  • pain or severe discomfort in your eye
  • redness of the white of your eye
  • constantly blurred vision, sometimes with rainbow halos around lights
If you experience any of these symptoms after screening, go back to the screening centre or your nearest accident and emergency (A&E) department.

I've had a migraine and nausea before. I now have a reduced amount of drops and that's helped a lot.

Is your headache easing now?

The wife did .. and is not diabetic ,, do you suffer with migraines anyway ? or is this new to you ..

Thank you @noblehead @azure and @Enclave.

I was seeing pink and purple light and had some blurred vision in the left eye too for around 15 minutes after the eye screening.

I didn't actually get any drops put in my eye, they didn't think I needed them.

I dont usually suffer from migraines, it's still as intense as it was yesterday. It's been 25.5 hours now, I think I'll call nhs 24 for advice

Good idea phoning for advice. Let us know how you are. I hope you feel better soon. :)

Thanks everyone for your comments. I ended up being given an appointment at out of hours. Have been given a diagnosis of sinusitis...I don't feel this is accurate as I dont have a cold or any cold like symptoms. Been sent home with a decongestant.

I agree @Dark Horse, that sounds exactly like what I have...Maybe the eye screening is just a coincidence or triggered the migraine

Do hope your rid of the migraine soon.. it can take the wife a few days to recover fully from a migraine, so take time to heal.
