Does anybody suffer with migraines? Ever since i've been put on metformin i've noticed my migraines have increased.

Interesting.... I am a T2 no meds but a chronic life long migraine sufferer. Flashing lights, liking...the lot :)

As soon as I started a Low Carb High Fat diet just over 7 weeks ago, I have not had one migraine....this is literally for the first time in my life or certainly as long as I can remember.

I hope you find a solution that works for you as I know how debilitating they can be:)

Diagnosed 13/4/16: T2, no meds, HbA1c 53, FBG 12.6, Trigs 3.6, HDL .75, LDL 4.0, BP 169/95, 13st 8lbs, waist 34" (2012 - 17st 7lbs, w 42").

2/6/16: FBG AV 4.6, Trigs 1.5, HDL 2.0, LDL 3.0, BP 120/72, 11st 11lbs, waist 30" (2012 - 17st 7lbs, w 42").

Regime: 20g LCHF, run 1 mile daily, weekly fasting.

5/6/16: Two BP readings now 112/64 & 112/66 :)

I've had migraines for a couple of years but I get the ocular one's as well and I get them via chocolate and but I have found that strong sun light gives me them as well and had been to the eye clinic to see if I had torn my retinas but I didn't and I was or have been put on to a tablet called Topiramate which has eased them but not taken them away from me but I have to use reactions glasses every day with a uv tint so that I don't hurt or burn my retinas and I am on insulin and strong pain relief but I take the migraines as they come and go into a dark place if I can or to sleep just to get rid of the pain and the nausea but it works for me anyway but I was told by the screen retina people that diabetics are prone to migraines and the same with the options who do my glasses and sun glasses every year

I have been very low carb for over two and half years now and have not had a migraine at all.
Flickering lights always did it for me, especially the low level strip lights in my work place. I still shy away from them.

But I believe that it is food related and since cutting carbs to a minimum and no dairy and no grains, potatoes etc. Then no migraines.
It works for me.
Metformin might have some ingredients that would trigger the migraine.

I know...how incredible is that as an unexpected corollary:

Nice to find somebody with the same experience. :)

I linked mine with dairy! As through my twenties(40 years ago!) I suffered some horrendous stomach and headaches contributing to some eating problems and sleep deprivation through the migraines.
I stopped dairy quite a bit but still had some lactose that are hidden in things like ready meals and if I had enough, the trigger would always be there.
I even have to check my meds to see if they contain more than 1% lactose in its ingredients

But the funny thing is, I'm not lactose intolerant.
But my tolerance to dairy is there when I eat or drink it because of what it does to my blood glucose levels!

Weird isn't it?

My identifier 25 years ago (now 54) was to stop eating chocolate entirely and the migs substantially eased.

But guess what I tested chocolate 90% and 99% 2 weeks ago and have been eating since in moderation and no migraines.

So there is no doubt it's diet...

What an amazing journey:)

Yes, I have the no milk chocolate, 90 % if possible!

When I was in my hypo hell, I had a constant back of the eyes around my sinus headache, that was the first symptom to clear once I cut the carbs out!

Yes, what a journey!

I've been a long term "common" migraine sufferer, and mine have been triggered by some of the common food culprits: dark chocolate, some blue cheeses, red wine. But also hormones pre menopause, stress, flashing/strobing lights, and over the last 10 years or so by stormy or windy weather. Since I've been on low carb though, I've had very few and they've tended to be weather and stress ones, but I can still set one off if I scoff too much dark chocolate, but I've not tried my other food triggers since I've had my diabetes. I'm also taking SR metformin (Metabet) and this hasn't caused any migraines. But I was taking a different brand and this did have side effects, including "normal" non migraine headaches, and our pharmacist switched me to my current brand. I'm also fine with Glucophage. It may be worth asking if you can change brands, in case you're reacting to any of your current metformin ingredients.
